NRAS’ response to the Government’s proposal on benefits changes 20 March 2025 A statement by Peter Foxton, CEO of NRAS, in response to the government’s proposals and updates in respect of benefit cuts contained in the Government’s Green Paper – Pathways to Work: Reforming Benefits and Support to Get Britain Working. The proposals from the Government outlined in the Green Paper will affect Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Universal Credit (UC), Employment Support Allowance (ESA) and Access to Work. The proposed reforms are substantial and are likely to affect a significant amount of people. On Monday, I signed an open letter to the Chancellor in collaboration with Scope, the disability charity, which outlines concerns shared by many charities about the cost of cuts for disabled people. Whilst we don’t know exactly how many people will be affected, it is likely to be significant, with these cuts having a major negative impact on their daily lives. To read more about this letter and Scope, click here Life costs more for disabled people. Huge numbers already live in poverty as a result of these extra costs. The impact of any cuts to disability benefits would be devastating. Scope – Open Letter to the Chancellor I know that there are many members of our community who may be affected by these proposals, and we will be strongly urging the Government to reconsider. For those living with a long-term condition and disability, benefits can be a lifeline in ensuring you have access to work, education, healthcare and more. I understand that for all those living with conditions like JIA and RA, announcements such as these can cause uncertainty, anxiety and stress. As an organisation, NRAS is committed to advocating for people living with RA and JIA and ensuring they have access to information and emotional support. Our Helpline is open from 9:30am-4:30pm Monday to Friday on 0800 2987650 should you wish to speak with one of our Information and Support team members. NRAS will be providing a formal response to the Government’s consultation. We will be looking at arranging Focus Groups for people living with JIA and RA in receipt of these benefits and at risk of having them changed, to collect opinions and concerns. If you would like to share your story or get involved in our campaign, please email campaigns@nras.org.uk and quote “benefit changes”.
