Better Bone Health – Fracture Risk15 March 2024A week after International Women’s Day, NRAS are highlighting the risk of osteoporosis for women and the campaign started by the Royal Osteoporosis Society for better bone health.“Half of women over the age of 50 will suffer fractures because of osteoporosis, and a fifth of men. That’s every other mother, every other grandmother.”It is also very important to know that individuals with Rheumatoid Arthritis are at a higher risk than the general population of developing osteoporosis and a higher rate of fractures due to osteoporosis. The Royal Osteoporosis Society has criticized the Budget for not providing additional funding for Fracture Liaison Services. According to the Royal Osteoporosis Society, Fracture Liaison Services diagnose people after their first fracture, so they can get access to bone-strengthening drugs and prevent life-limiting fractures. These services are the world standard for care, available in 55 countries, but the UK has fallen way behind, resulting in two-thirds of people with osteoporosis missing treatment. To read more about the Royal Osteoporosis Society’s campaign see here: Web link Fracture Liaison Service Campaign The Royal Osteoporosis Society's campaign for the Fracture Liaison Service To read more about the risk posed by osteoporosis to individuals with RA, please see our article below: Article Osteoporosis in RA Osteoporosis is a condition that weakens the bone, making people more prone to fractures.
