News, 21 Jun What’s in a name? – A personal view (Personal Blog by Ailsa) I’ve lived with sero-negative, inflammatory polyarthritis for nearly half a life-time, (39 years), which I refer to as RA. That was the diagnosis I was given at the time, but along the way I was told I had the HLAB27 gene which people with RA do not routinely have. This particular gene relates to Ankylosing Spondylitis which is what my father had from before I was born. Also in recent years I have developed mild psoriasis although I’m not sure whether this is due to the disease process or a side effect of the many drugs I have taken to combat this dreadful disease. Research suggests South Asian people with RA are often forced to hide their condition due to society beliefs, misconceptions etc. Combined with language barriers, this can have a severe impact on their ability to receive accurate info and live a healthy life.
