Disability benefits cuts announced in the Spring Statement

31 March 2025

Following the news last week that benefits related to disability would be affected by cuts, we have learnt more from the publication of the government’s Green Paper “Pathways to Work: Reforming Benefits and Support to Get Britain Working” and information including within the Spring Statement and other impact assessments on what these changes are going to be and how it will affect individuals in our community.

As Peter outlined in the initial response to the proposals we remain concerned about the impact that these changes will have on disabled people across the UK and specifically the impact for those living with RA and JIA. The government has provided more detail on their plans as well as a financial impact statement, we have provided a further response with our concerns below.

NRAS’ response to Government’s benefits changes

To reassure individuals living with RA and JIA in receipt of these benefits, we have been advised that these changes will not come into effect until 2026-2027 at the earliest and that your current period of renewal will be honoured. This means that if you had a reassessment recently, you will remain eligible until the future date set out in your award letter. If you are due a reassessment before the changes come into force, you will be assessed under the current rules. Finally, for those who have yet to apply, the current rules will be in effect until changes are made. This means that you should continue with your application or renewal. As above, your benefit entitlement will not change immediately.

We understand that for all those living with conditions like JIA and RA, announcements such as these can cause uncertainty, anxiety and stress. Our Helpline is open from 9:30am-4:30pm Monday to Friday on 0800 2987650 should you wish to speak with one of our Information and Support team members.

NRAS will be providing a formal response to the Government’s consultation. We will be looking at arranging Focus Groups for people living with JIA and RA in receipt of these benefits and at risk of having them changed, to collect opinions and concerns. If you would like to share your story or get involved in our campaign, please email campaigns@nras.org.uk and quote “benefit changes”.
